Indian Airlines: Commanding a large and modern jet fleet, the
Indian Airlines (IC) network spans the country 3,000 km, from Leh in north to Thiruvananthapuram in the south and about the same from east to west, covers all important places of tourism interest, linking 54 cities in India and 15 in 11 neighbouring countries including Bangladesh, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Kuwait, UAE, Oman and Malaysia.


Private Air Taxis / Domestic Airlines:
There is a choice of private airlines to several cities and country, such as and Delhi Airways, Sahara, Archana Airways, Skyline NEPC and Jagson Airlines, among others.


INDIA BY RAILThe Indrail Pass: Indian Railways have this facility which
offers budget visitors the facility to travel as they like over the entire Indian railway system without any route restriction within the period of validity of the ticket. Indrail passes are sold only to foreign nationals and Indians residing abroad. They must hold valid passports. Payment is accepted only in US dollars and pound sterling. A tourist travelling on this pass is exempt from paying reservation fee, sleeper charges and extra supplementary charges for travelling by superfast trains which are chargeable in the case of ordinary tickets.

Indrail Passes on half-day, two-day and four-day basis are also available and are economical for tourists intending to visit places, the journey time of which fits in these durations. These can also be used as convenient supplements to extend the journey time which otherwise is not covered by the Indrail Passes, for 1, 7, 15, 21, 30, 60 and 90 days. Indrail Passes for half day, one-day, two-days and four days duration are sold by GSAs abroad.

Royal Orient Express:
This unique experience offered by Indian Railways. Operational between September to April, the train leaves from Delhi Cantonment, halting at some of the 'royal' cities, including Chittaurgarh, Udaipur, Palitana, Veraval, Ahmedabad and Jaipur. Tariff is US$350 per person per night on single occupancy, $ 200 per person per night on twin-sharing basis, and $ 175 per person per night on triple-sharing. Bookings are confirmed against a 10 per cent deposit. Accommodation is mainly in coupes, each carriage with a lounge, mini-bar, kichenette and modern toilets. For details and booking, contact

Tourist Trains:
Two Rajdhani train services link New Delhi with Mumbai in the west and Calcutta in the east, with departure schedule for the evening and arrival timed for a working morning. Rajdhani also operates between Delhi-Bangalore, Delhi-Bhubaneswar and Delhi-Chennai.

From Delhi is a Shatabdi Express train that connects with Arga, Gwalior, Jhansi and Bhopal, returning the same day. Shatabdi trains operate between Delhi-Luc know and Delhi-Chandigarh. (For details on the Rajdhani and Shataabdi trains, see the New Delhi section).

The Taj Express provides a fast link to Agra, and the Pink City Express to Jaipur. Comfortable, A/C travel is available on a number of other trains. It is an experience to travel on the 'toy' hill trains, to Darjeeling in the east, Shimla and Kangra in Himachal Pradesh in the north, and in the Nilgiris in the south and the Western Ghats.


INDIA BY ROAD
After the railways, surface transport is the chief means of travel within and between cities. Taxis are available in cities and fares are charged on a kilometre basis. In Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Chennai and other major cities, metred taxis as well as luxury cars with our metres are available on hire. Regular bus services also operate. There are conducted tours in most tourist centres to popular destinations.

Rent-a-Car
India offers rent-a-car services, with prominent international companies tying up with Indian firms to provide these services. Counters at airports provide the facility of hiring chauffeur-driven cars. Your travel agent can assist in hiring a car.
